"A professional writer is an amateur that didn't quit." -Richard Bach
I love that quote! I don't have a degree in Journalism or English, but I've enjoyed some success with writing. Writing articles and blogs is something I love to do. I enjoy interviewing people and taking a story from an idea to a finished product. I've also written two novels, several short stories, and a few middle grade books. I love getting inside a characters head and bringing them to life on the page.
My advice to people who feel that they have a story to tell is: Don't talk about it - DO IT. Getting started with any writing project starts with getting the words down on paper. Editing and revising is where the magic happens. So let your pen flow (or your fingers type) and get the words on paper. Writing is a process, which is why they call it a craft because there is always something to learn, or hone. Trust me, I know it's hard but not doing it is worse than trying and making mistakes along the way. Also, find a writing tribe, or a friend who writes to help you stay motivated. Those connections are invaluable!
About Kathy's writing journey:
Kathy writes articles, novels, short stories, personal essays, and blogs.
It wasn’t until her thirties that Kathy Sloan realized writing was her passion. In 2003, Kathy wrote her first novel. She had only set out to write down some stories about her being a daycare provider but before long it turned into a full-blown fiction novel. “I had never written anything longer than a research paper in college and suddenly words were pouring out of my soul. It really was magical,” Sloan says.
Since 2003, Kathy has been working very hard at honing her craft. She has written other novels, several short stories and even a one act play. However, it wasn’t until 2011, that Kathy decided that writing was no longer something she could NOT do. Kathy began blogging for a local newspaper and freelance writing for Yahoo Contributor where she was able to really find her writing voice. In November of that same year, she participated in NanoWriMo and completed another novel. In 2012, she began freelance writing blogs for businesses. Then, in 2014 her dream of writing a magazine article became a reality. Editor, MaryJo Kurtz gave Sloan an assignment for Baystate Parent Magazine and the rest they say, is history. Sloan has written over 20 articles since 2014.
Sloan attends writing conferences and takes as many online writing classes that she can. She admits she will always struggle with grammar, commas, and apostrophes and says to the "grammar police" out there: "Yes, I know the difference between "its" and "it's" but sometimes my brain types the wrong one." Thank God for editors!
In her spare time, Kathy loves to spend time with family and friends. She enjoys yoga, self-improvement through spiritual learning, cooking, and going to the beach. She reads as many books as time allows, and loves to watch a good movie with her family. She lives for trips to New York City!
Kathy has lived in Central Mass all of her life, but hopes to one day migrate to a warmer climate.
